VOICE STUDIO

Registration for Summer Session 2025 is NOW OPEN! With a new cap at 60 students, spaces will be very limited so act quickly. Students new to the studio will be processed in the order in which the registration is received.

Now to the fun stuff…

No matter what age you or your student are, you've come to the right place. My only requirement is a willingness to learn, make mistakes, and have fun exploring music and the voice together.

I want to welcome you to my private voice studio and thank you for your interest. The Summer Session will begin on June 5th and continue through the end of July.

In our lessons, you can expect to:

Grow your repertoire
Learn healthy vocal technique
Have fun with a fellow music lover!

Karlianne has always had a love for singing, but now that she has been working with Grant, he has helped build her confidence in a way that still amazes me. He pushes her, all while encouraging her to be the best she can be!

GUESS WHAT DAY IT WAS?!

On March 29th, 2025 it was “World Piano Day!”

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT… Brayden Frederick!

Brayden loves to sing, and he loves theater. His biggest role to date has been the Cowardly Lion in “Wizard of Oz.” He has also had other roles in his school and local theater programs. He is also in the choir.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT… Charlie Liebner!

Charlie loves to play the piano, guitar, ukulele, and sing. He has won numerous awards in piano at competitions and festivals, and will be playing in at the GCSS Winner’s Concert at Carnegie Hall this summer. Charlie also enjoys playing in his community and church. His other activities include soccer, quiz bowl, and robotics.

Go Charlie! You rock!

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT… Sarah Austin!

Sarah Austin is a dedicated and passionate young leader from Guntersville, Alabama. A senior at Marshall Christian School, she excels academically while actively participating in theater and community initiatives. Sarah is an advocate for mental health awareness, particularly focusing on PANDAS disease and other hidden illnesses through her platform, Brave Minds Matter. She plans to further her education at Jacksonville State University, majoring in theater with a minor in education. Known for her resilience, creativity, and compassion, Sarah strives to make a difference both on and off the stage, inspiring others with her determination and heart for advocacy.

VOCAL TIPS WITH GRANT!

Here’s the perfect opportunity to brush up your lingo!

“WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GLISSANDO AND PORTAMENTO?”

A glissando means “to glide.” This approach connects two notes with small pitstops on the notes in between. Think walking up and down the stairs really quickly!

A portamento means “to carry.” When singing a portamento, the singer slides from one note to another without stopping. #glstudiosllc

No, you’re not seeing double! Our spotlight this week is… ERYN STEEN (Molly’s sister!)

Eryn enjoys participating in Beauty Pageants and has been awarded 24 crowns in 2024 so far. She began voice lessons with Grant in order to help hone her skill for the talent portion of pageants and to help prepare her for community and school theatre performances. It’s safe to say that she loves the stage in any capacity. Her greatest pageant achievements are winning the title of Elite Grand Supreme and becoming Miss Guntersville Lake Christmas as well as winning Overall Pageant Interview at Miss Bama Belle. Her favorite theatrical endeavors include being a part of the cast in Newsies Jr / The Whole Backstage and performing at the National Performing Arts Festival in Orlando with Lighthouse Theatre.

VOCAL TIPS WITH GRANT!

It’s that time of year again when a lot of singers ask:

“HOW CAN I STAY HYDRATED AND HEALTHY THIS WINTER?”

Drink your water! Take your vitamins! Stay in school!

It should go without saying that drinking water is absolutely necessary for hydration.
Try a vocal steamer to send hydration straight to your vocal cords and vocal tract!

Winter can be especially hard when folks don’t receive as many natural nutrients (i.e. sun, diet, exercise). Check in with your doctor and make sure your body is receiving the vitamins and minerals it needs to be productive. Your instrument is a part of your body! #glstudiosllc

Our next spotlight is… MOLLY STEEN!

Molly is a straight A student and an officer for her school’s Beta Club. She is also an avid thespian who has been taking voice lessons with Grant for two years. Molly enjoys performing in local theater The Whole Backwa gee streis also a part of the Youth Praise Team at First Baptist Church and the Guntersville Middle School choir. Molly has been a part of theatre productions and competitions across the Southeast United States. Her favorite theatrical endeavors include playing Alice Wendleken in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever / The Whole Backstage and playing John the Baptist in Godspell Jr./ Lighthouse Theatre.

Mackenzie Dowdy has been taking lessons from Grant since 2021. She looks forward to her lessons every week.
She is a college student majoring in Theatre. Her recent show is Evil Dead the Musical with Athenian Players and was recently in Dreamweavers
Disney Descendants as Smitten Kid 2.
When she is not on the stage or singing, she likes to collect comic books, paint, draw and sing.

VOCAL TIPS WITH GRANT!

What is a pentatonic scale?

You’ve heard of the popular acapella group Pentatonix, but what actually is a pentatonic scale? Well…

The Pentatonic scale is a scale that reduces the typical seven distinct tones in a major/minor to just five. The pitches included are:

DO RE MI SO LA

These pitches typically sound harmonious together and work well when sung on top of most of the chords used in pop, rock, blues, etc. This is one of the best ways singers can start to learn riffing! Start by singing the pentatonic scale up, then down, then move around octaves. #glstudiosllc

Our next student spotlight… TIFFANY SMITH!

Tiffany Smith has been taking vocal lessons from Grant for two years now. She has participated in Arab Musical Theatre for four years and has performerd in Legally Blonde Jr., Chicago, Once Upon a Mattress, and Mary Poppins.

She will be performing in The Drowsy
Chaperone this coming Spring. She has also participated in Mean Girls with Lighthouse Theatre Company. She is looking forward to continuing her acting career in her next adventure at Auburn University.

VOCAL TIPS WITH GRANT!

It’s that time! Here’s our next question:

How can I get better at harmony?

This is another frequent question. The key here is practice, practice, practice.

First, a harmony is a note added to the melody to create a richer, more dynamic sound. In order to truly understand harmony, you need to understand chords and intervals.

If you want to add a harmony to a song, the quickest option is to try adding a third, a fourth, or a fifth above or below the melody line. But in order to really hone in on the harmony, figure out the chords (diminished/augmented can be tricky!) and chose a note within the chord.

Once you’ve mastered that, try out some passing tones that may not be already present in the chord but compliment the sound. #glstudiosllc
